Not Quite There Yet

Well, I didn’t quite make my deadline to get the new issue of the Gypsy Journal finished by last night. With all the delays messing with our power problem on Saturday I just could not catch up. I still have a little over four pages to go so I should be able to wrap it up today and get it to the printer.



This is going to be a good issue. We have stories on everything from Oregon coast lighthouses to the Astoria Column, the Port Orford Lifeboat Station, a historic woolen mill in Salem Oregon, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, the Castle Air Museum, the Living Memorial Sculpture Garden in Weed, California and more! I think our readers are really going to enjoy it.

Speaking of our power problem, I’m more confused than I was when I began. As I said in yesterday’s blog, our power blipped on and off several times on Saturday, knocking my computer off-line before it came right back on. After talking to my friend Phil Botnick, an excellent RV tech, I turned our inverter off Saturday evening and left it off all night and most of the day yesterday. That seemed to do the trick, because the power stayed on with no problem, even when Terry did laundry. We are on a 50 amp site and never pulled more than 20 amps with everything we had on; dryer, two computers, television, and using our laser printer.



But about 5 o’clock when I knocked off for dinner, I turned the inverter back on to see if the problem returned. And it didn’t. Not one blipp the rest of the evening as I worked away, Terry used the dryer, and even her Breville toaster oven, all at the same time. So now I don’t know what to think. Could’ve just been some glitch in the incoming power of the inverter or whatever that is now gone away? Or the gremlins just messing with me because it’s fun to do? Who knows?

This is the original 1500 watt modified sine wave Heart inverter that came with our motorhome back in 2002, and to be honest, I’m surprised it has lasted this long. I’ve seen a lot of RVers replace them long before this. If we do have to replace it, I’m definitely going with the Magnum Energy 2000 watt pure sine wave model. In my opinion, they are far superior to anything else on the market. But if the darned thing is going to die on me, I wish it would do it before Phil leaves the area!

  1. It appears that you are doing better health wise. Suggest you visit with Phil more on the inverter, might not be a bad idea to swap it out for a new one. Good luck on wrapping up the last issue of the printed Gypsy Journal.

  3. Glad your health is doing better. Nick if you are looking at Magnum Inverters, check out the Hybrid models. They can work along or with any electric source incoming. Example is we were hooked up at home to 15 amp service plug 110 and after reading the manual I tried turning on both AC’s at once then turned on the Micro wave and it handled it all. We do have a 4024 hybrid but with only 4 , 6 volt deep cyle batteries. They make a 3312 12 volt unit also. I have no affiliation with them just love that inverter.

  4. It could be a problem somewhere in the park and not in your coach…..that has happened to us more than once.

  5. We had a similar problem with our inverter back in Oct. The big difference was we ignored the small glitches and then on day we came home to no power period, We had a great person come out and by pass the inverter so we could get power to the coach. We finally found a new one in Livingston and a great dealer to deal with. The overnighted one and it took less than an hour to take the old one out and new one in. Ours was over 10 years old and the gentlemen who installed it was amazed it lasted that long.

  6. Nick,I have a 2003 Winnebago and had a similar problem. Inside my inverter,there is a relay with 4 sets of contacts.One set of contacts was burned. I replaced relay for less than $10 and problem was fixed. It can happen,ask Greg about intermittent contacts. 🙂

  7. Hey, Nick,
    We have the same inverter you do, I think, in our 02 fifth wheel. It has rarely had a problem but it is so totally wired into everything in the coach that if it’s unhappy anything else in the system can be impacted. There is a reset button on the side of the inverter. If you can get to the inverter and find the button and press it your good to go. The biggest problem is our inverter is in the least accessible place they could have put it. Unpack the entire hold, take a jillion screws out of the panel in the back of the hold while you are all scrunched up and then without upsetting the wiring harness for the trailer find the button. Something for your Greg list.
