A lot of readers have been asking me when I will upload the registration page for our Eastern Gypsy Gathering Rally, which will be held August 30 to September 3, at Elkhart Campground, in Elkhart, Indiana. I got the page uploaded yesterday, and you can access it with this Registration Link.

We are trying something that we have never done before with this rally, in holding it at a regular RV park instead of at a fairgrounds, like we have in the past. This is an experiment to answer the many requests of rally attendees for full hookups, instead of the standard 20 amp electric we usually have at fairgrounds. We are offering both 50 and 30 amp full hookups, as well as 50 and 30 water and electric only. We have a limited number of RV sites, so register soon to reserve your site.

Of course, it costs more to offer these amenities, and the price is reflected in the rally registration costs. Registration costs are on a sliding scale, based upon the type of hookups you choose.

I know we can’t please everybody, and I have already had a few people complain that the cost is higher than at previous rallies. I’m sorry folks, but we can’t have it both ways. If you want fairgrounds prices, you get fairgrounds accommodations. If you want RV park accommodations, you have to pay RV park prices.

However, in looking at the cost for other RV rallies, I think you will find that we are charging less than most other events, and offering a lot more than many of them.

The timing and location for this rally are perfect for anybody who will be going to the Escapees RV Club’s  Fall Escapade, which will be in nearby Goshen, Indiana September 12-17. This will be the Escapees’ 50th Escapade rally, and it’s going to be a great event that you won’t want to miss. Elkhart Campground owners Bob and Gita Patel welcome our Gypsy Gathering attendees to stay over after our rally while they wait to go into Escapade.

Elkhart Campground is our summer base, and we have been going there for so many years that it feels like home to us. We have watched Bob and Gita’s two sons grow up over the years, and they treat us like family. The campground has a swimming pool, WiFi internet access, rec room, and clean showers and restrooms.

Elkhart and the surrounding area have a lot to see and do, including touring such great places as the RV Hall of Fame Museum, the Midwest Museum of American Art, the Ruthmere Museum, the National New York Central Railroad Museum, the Studebaker National Museum, Hostetler’s Hudson Automobile Museum, Amish Acres Historic Farm and Heritage Resort, and the Meono-Hof Amish Mennonite Cultural Center. There are also RV factory tours, exploring Amish country, and the huge Shipshewana Flea Market.

I am working on the seminar lineup now, and if you have been to any of our past events, you know we’ll have a fine lineup of seminars on many aspects of RVing and the RV lifestyle. It is always a challenge to come up with new and interesting seminars, and we have some old favorites and interesting new ones to offer you at our Eastern Rally. If you would like to present a seminar at the rally, please contact me at editor@gypsyjournal.net with a brief description of what you have in mind. We especially need RV technical and craft seminars.

We look forward to seeing you in Elkhart!

  1. We are happy to see you try a regular campground. Not that we have any dislike of fairgrounds but we are just too lazy to put up with few if no hookups, parking in dirt areas that turn to mud when raining, and of course those ditches that fill with rain that some people have a tendency to fall into.

We will watch to see how this goes with your attendees. If you continue to use campgrounds we will attend one in the future.

Unfortunately we cannot attend this one since we will be Ouray, CO during the time of your rally.

  2. One thing I forgot to mention, if this works well, you will have a wider selection of places that you could hold your rallies. Particularly, this summer rally could be moved around to other parts of the country. That might spark continued interest in attending future rallies.

  3. Would love to be attending, as we had a really great time with you in Yuma, but new grandbaby trumps RV rally! Next time!

  4. Wow! Great upgrade! Elkhart CG is an excellent facility and we consider it a treat to have a rally there! At present we are in Camp Verde with our Newmar Fulltimers and have paid $200 for 4 days in a full hookup site. There is great commaraderie here with continental breakfasts every day (one had bacon and eggs) plus three simple dinners…but no seminars of any kind, just alot of free time to explore the many things in the area. We’re having a great time getting together but, having attended 4 Gypsy Journal Rallies…you get much more “bang for your buck”!!! It’s a real bargain!

  5. Good Morning Nick… I find that when handling groups you’ll always have someone who is not happy but usually the majority is… Have fun & travel safe!!!

  6. We have been to the Elkhart campground and it is very nice. The price for the rally is very reasonable and the cost is great too, we attend other big rallies and they cost a lot more with a lot less to offer. We will see you there.

  7. We’ve stayed at Elkhart Campgound but only got to see a fraction of the sights in that area. We’ve been to Gypsy Gatherings but only got to go to a fraction of the seminars. Anyone planning to come should plan to come early and/or stay late if they want to see and do even half of what’s being offered!

  8. Putting our registration in NOW!!!!

  9. Hmm, no option for early arrivals this time around? Anyway, we’re now registered…can’t wait. We’re ready for parking duty or anything else we can do to help. We’ll plan on being in the area a couple of days early.

  10. Anyone planning to arrive early or stay after the rally can make reservations for those days directly with Elkhart Campground at 574-264-2914.

  11. Hi Nick & Terri! We are REALLY getting hitch-itch & wanting to travel extensively as you well know. We have been in contact with a couple of companies that would fit our financial needs (we hope) and are considering them seriously. We would like to know if you have heard of ID Plans out of Braden, Fla. or have talked to anyone who has worked for them in the past. We are scheduled to interview on Mon. April 12 and then go to Fla. for intense training and soon after work as independent contractors. We have been in contact with them in the past and they recently called us for an interview. If you have any info we would appreciate it. Thanks, Russ & Debbie Davis in Ohio

  12. Russ and Debbie,
I’m afraid I have not heard of ID Plans, so I have no input to offer on them.

  13. We have never been to one of your rallies, but my sister and her husband have attended several and have very good things to say about them. We both retire at the end of this school year and plan to travel extensively in our fifth wheel, so we are planning to come to your rally and learn as much as we can!

  14. Way too rich for my blood. I’ll take a pas. I’ve never been to a rally yet that was worth over $100, camping included. These people who all demand 50 amps and full hookups have no idea what real RVing is all about. I go into an RV park about 3 times a year if that, and I have been a fulltimer over 7 years.

  15. We are sending our check in Monday morning! Will the Geeks be there with their computer classes? We had a family emergency and could not see them in Albuquerque. I sure want to see their seminars.

  16. We are new RVers and have heard a lot about the RV factory tours in Elkhart area. Now we have an excuse to go to your rally and stay around to tour the factories before Escapade.

  17. Gosh Nick, I never knew there was so much to see and do in and around Elkhart! And we’ve stopped there several times. Agree with you about the Patels. Very nice folks who run an excellent, clean, friendly campground.

  18. Paul & Tammy,
Yes, the Geeks have us on their schedule. Their seminars are first rate.

  19. While Lynn and I have enjoyed the past two western gatherings, and would love to attend this eastern gathering, I am afraid we just can’t fit it in. I am being inducted into the Elks at the Clovis CA lodge on 8/24 and need to be in West Yellowstone, MT on 9/4 for a Tracks to Adventure tour of the National Parks. Have a great rally and we will see you next year in Yuma.
