I have met a lot of wonderful people in my life and I’ve met some strange ones, too, no question about that. I’ve met people who were friendly, I’ve met people who are rude, I’ve met people who were sad, I’ve met people who were happy, and I’ve met people who were pretty much batshit crazy. Sometimes those kinds of people are the most fun.

But let me ask you this? What kind of guy takes a vacation from his job, travels 1,000 miles to someplace where it’s very hot and humid, and then spends his time working on stuff for free? Really, who would do that? The answer is, this man.

Our friends Greg and Jan White have been visiting Florida for a week or so now and staying in an RV park down in Mims, about 25 miles south of us. And except for a couple of days when they went to visit other friends in the area, they have been spending most of their time with us. Which means that Greg has been playing Mr. Fix-it.

First he started out dealing with some computer problems that Terry and I were having and he got those squared away the first day they were here. Then he moved on to other projects. Here he is on the roof of our place installing a weBoost cell phone signal amplifier.

As I’ve mentioned before, even though there is a Verizon tower just a mile or so from our house, we are in a dead spot and phone service is terrible. Verizon sent me a couple of different cell phone boosters that they thought would do the job, but neither one helped at all. The other day we hung the weBoost, which was originally for RV use, off of our porch light fixture, ran a cable through the door and hooked it up to the inside signal amplifier, and our phones went from one bar to four bars of signal strength in our living room. Unfortunately, if we left the room and got very far away from it, the signal faded rapidly. Hopefully having the outside antenna on a pole up in the air will help even more. Keep your fingers crossed for us.

Mounting the outside antenna wasn’t much of a chore, really. Greg just disconnected the old triangle shaped antenna that was on the roof and mounted the weBoost in its place. The holdup came when it came time to run the coaxial cable inside the house. Greg attached it to an old piece of coax that comes through the wall and into the living room from some earlier TV antenna installation, and we thought it would be pretty simple to just pull it through. As it turned out, we were wrong. There’s a tight spot inside the wall that the cable needs to go through, and that proved to be a real challenge. So much so that after two hours of fighting with it we decided to knock off and go to dinner at the Sea Shack, one of our favorite local restaurants. We took Greg and Jan there on Sunday and they really liked it and wanted to go back. And you never have to twist my arm very hard to get me to go to any place that serves seafood.

Today is Greg and Jan’s last day here before they head home to Texas on Friday, and I’m not sure what’s on the agenda. There is still the coax to run, if we can get it to cooperate, and I’ve got plenty of other honey-dos. But I really think Greg should relax and enjoy at least part of his vacation, don’t you? The only thing is, he is kind of stubborn when it comes to things like that, so we will just have to play it by ear and see.

It’s Thursday, so it’s time for a new Free Drawing. This week’s prize is an audiobook of Hands of Onyx, book 2 in the Sav’ine series by Stacy Bender. It’s a story about cybernetic soldiers escorting a long haul space freighter to the outer rim planets, dealing with saboteurs who are trying to stop them and a crew that includes a half-blind medic, an explosives expert who is a sociopath, and an interrogator suffering from dementia. What could possibly go wrong? To enter, all you have to do is click on this Free Drawing link or the tab at the top of this page and enter your name in the comments section at the bottom of that page (not this one). Only one entry per person per drawing please, and you must enter with your real name. To prevent spam or multiple entries, the names of cartoon or movie characters are not allowed. The winner will be drawn Sunday evening.

And finally, here’s another chuckle to start your day from the collection of funny signs we see in our travels and that our readers share with us.

Thought For The Day – Dear Karma, I have a list of people you missed.
