Another Twofer

The other day I told you about getting a twofer when I crossed two things off of my bucket list; catching a fish from a kayak, and catching a redfish. Now, today, I want to tell you about a different kind of twofer.

Today our dear friend Jim Lewis has a birthday. I had two brothers by birth, both of whom were much older than me, so we were never really that close in terms of being brothers. But I’ve been honored to have a handful of men in my life who I have considered to be my brothers. And Jim is right there at the top of the list. We have been friends for over 30 years now and have had some wonderful adventures together, as well as seeing each other through some very dark times. And in all of that time, I don’t think we’ve ever exchanged an angry word. Happy birthday, Jim, I love you.

The second half of that twofer is that my very good friend, Carol Ann Newsome, is also having a birthday today! Carol Ann is the author of the wonderful Dog Park mystery series, and we were honored to be able to meet her and have lunch together a few years ago when we were in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. I hope you have a wonderful day, sweet lady.

Miss Terry has been having some problems with blurry vision for a while now, and a year or so ago an optometrist told her that she had cataracts but they weren’t to the point of needing surgery yet. He said she was probably about a year away from needing the procedure. A year has passed and the problem has persisted, so the other day she had an appointment with an eye specialist in Titusville. After a thorough examination, he told her that while she does have the beginnings of some cataract issues, she does not need surgery yet. He diagnosed the ongoing problem as dry eyes and told her to get some off the shelf Refresh Optiva eye drops and use them four times a day and see if that helps. She is supposed to go back in two weeks for a follow-up visit. We were impressed because instead of scheduling her for something she really doesn’t need yet, he is first taking the time to investigate alternatives.

While we were in Titusville we had dinner at a place called The Irish Pub, which had very good reviews on Yelp for their fish and chips. And those reviewers were right. Terry and I both agreed that they were some of the best we’ve had anywhere. We will definitely be going back again the next time we are in that area.

We also learned something new, related to our kayak fishing expedition a few days ago. Did you know that if you drop a live shrimp in your kayak and forget about it, and leave it in a closed up garage in 80° weather for a couple of days, it can can get so rank you would think you left a whole stringer of fish in there? You don’t have to try this experiment for yourself, just trust me on it, okay?

Guess who spent some time washing the kayaks down and airing out the garage yesterday? And I thought I was going to be bored waiting to start writing my next book!

  1. Talking about learning something new & garages… My grandpa told my dad who told me to never ever shoot a skunk in the garage!

  2. We have been to the Irish Pub many times over the years for the fish. Good stuff! Alas, we now live in N GA and may not get back to the Pub soon.

  3. I have been using the Refresh Plus eyedrops and the Refresh Celluvisc Lubricant Eye Gel for several years, while I waited for my cataracts to “mature”. My dry eye really became noticeable when we moved full time to AZ. I purchase the drops in single use applicators at Costco, and prefer those to the larger bottles. Handy to keep in pocket, purse (or boat of kayak) and no danger of contamination! The Celluvisc is much slimier and I really like that one for bedtime. Makes a huge difference in my eye comfort and quality of vision!
