I’m way behind on my latest Big Lake book, so most of my time lately has been spent at my desk trying to play catch-up. Between Sunday and Wednesday I managed to get about 10,000 words done, and then another 3,800 words yesterday. That puts me well past the halfway point and it’s rolling right along.
Quite a few of my readers have been asking me when this new book will be out. I never give an exact date for a book release, because when I do something always goes wrong to throw me off schedule. But I will say that getting it finished is my top priority right now.
Some people say authors are quirky people, and maybe that’s true. Some of my writing friends say they have to have soft music playing in the background when they work, and others say they want the stereo cranked up full blast. Depending on who they are, it can be anything from easy listening to hard rock to country. A popular science fiction author I know says he has to be wearing his tattered old St. Louis Cardinals sweatshirt when he writes, no matter if it’s the dead of winter and there’s a blizzard rattling the house or it’s the middle of summer and the thermometer is topping 90°. A well-known romance author I know tells me she always has to have a hot cup of coffee sitting beside her on her desk. She says she only sips a little bit as she works, and once it gets cold she has to empty the cup and refill it with more hot coffee before she can continue.
I know authors who say they can’t write unless they are in a quiet room all by themselves, while others can tune out what’s going on around them and work anywhere. After spending much of my life in the small town newspaper business, I can pretty much ignore distractions wherever I am when I’m writing. But I will admit that it’s nice to have my cozy little office and my big old roll top desk.
I’ve got plenty of quirks of my own, although I don’t know if any of them actually are directly related to writing. Then again, maybe I’m wrong. I have at least a dozen different Gypsy Journal T-shirts, including three green ones from our 2009 Celina, Ohio rally. I just realized that for some reason, I almost always put on one of those green shirts when I’m working. And the strange thing is, green isn’t even my favorite color. Go figure.
One of my quirks, not just about writing, is that I don’t like to wear shoes when I’m at home. But I don’t like being barefoot either, so I always wear socks around the house. Yesterday Miss Terry looked at my feet and said I was wearing mismatched socks. I told her she was wrong because I’ve got another pair just like these in my underwear drawer.
We’ve been getting a lot of rain here on the coast in central Florida lately, which is good after the long drought we’ve experienced. Is it just a coincidence that right after I moved here Florida had the worst drought in 75 years? I will leave that to you to decide.
Just how much rain have we been getting? This is what it said on the WTForecast on my smart phone yesterday! Besides being fun and free, it’s actually a pretty accurate app, too.

Only one entry per person per drawing please, and you must enter with your real name. To prevent spam or multiple entries, the names of cartoon or movie characters are not allowed. The winner will be drawn Sunday evening.
